Relieving Pain After ACL Surgery

The most important thing you can do to recover quickly after your ACL surgery, is to follow your surgeon’s instructions.

•  Make a follow up appointment 5 to 10 days after surgery.

•  Ask for a physical therapy appointment if you do not have one scheduled.

Protect your knee

•  Elevate your leg to limit swelling.

•  When standing and walking as your thigh muscles may not be fully functional and may not be able to support your weight, so be careful and have assistance.

•  Anesthesia effects remain for 24 hours or longer.

•  Do not drive or make important decisions during this time.

Cold therapy is the best method to reduce pain and swelling after surgery.

Some of the benefits of cold therapy are :

•  Decreases pain

•  Reduces swelling

•  Decreases muscle spasms

•  Reduces edema

•  Improves tissue healing

•  Efficient and rapid removal of heat transfer from the injury site

•  Reduces or eliminates need for pain medication post-injury

Be sure to use your IsoComforter cold therapy unit for the first 48 hours after surgery. Follow your surgeon’s instructions. It is our recommendation that you use the cold therapy machine 20-30 minutes on and then 30 minutes off, making frequent skin checks before, during, and after therapy.

•  Do not apply the cold pad directly to the skin.

•  Be sure to place a soft cloth between your skin and the cold therapy pad to protect your skin.

•  If blisters or redness appears, discontinue cold therapy on the affected area.

•  Make sure to read all cold therapy machine instructions and follow your surgeon’s recommendations.
